Use a verified alias in Distro

Pick a Gmail alias as the From address for a campaign or single email, set it as your default sender, and know what changes when the alias changes in Gmail.

Updated 4 min read

Once Gmail has verified an alias and you've added it in Distro, it appears as its own sender on the Sending accounts page, marked Alias of the Google account it belongs to. You can then choose it in the From field of any campaign or single email, or make it your default sender.

Check the alias is ready

Open Outreach โ†’ Sending accounts. The alias should be listed with:

  • the alias address, and Alias of your main Google address underneath it,
  • the status Active.

If it shows Waiting for Google, Gmail hasn't finished verifying it. Confirm the verification email Google sent, then open the sender and click Check again. If it isn't listed at all, click Add sender, enter the alias and click Enable. Distro finds it in your connected Google account without a new sign-in. Still missing? See Why my alias is not showing in Distro.

Only Active senders can be picked in campaigns. That covers the Google account's own address and any alias Gmail reports as verified.

Use the alias in a campaign

  1. Open Outreach โ†’ Campaigns and create or open a campaign.
  2. In the first email, click the From field. It lists every sender you can use as "Name <address>", with (default) after your default sender.
  3. Choose the alias.

The campaign keeps that sender until you change it. When you launch, Distro locks in the sender's address, name and Google account for that run.

Use the alias for a single email

  1. Open Campaigns and click Compose single email.
  2. Choose the alias in the From dropdown.

A new draft starts with your default sender selected. If you haven't set up any sender yet, the dropdown says No sender set up yet with a Set up link to the Sending accounts page.

Make the alias your default sender

On the Sending accounts page, open the alias's โ‹ฎ menu and click Set as default. New campaigns and new single-email drafts then start with it selected. You have one default sender across all your connected Google accounts. Changing the default doesn't change campaigns that already have a sender chosen.

The name recipients see

The Name you type for the sender on the Sending accounts page is the From name recipients see. If you leave it empty, Distro uses the name saved for that address in Gmail. You can change it any time: open the sender, edit Name and click Done. More detail: Change your From name and Reply-To address.

Where replies go

Replies go to the address the prospect replies to: the alias, or the Reply-To address if you set one. For a Google Workspace alias, that's the same Gmail inbox as the main account, so Distro sees the reply in its Inbox, and stop-on-reply works as usual.

For an address hosted at another provider and added through "Send mail as", replies land at that provider instead, where Distro can't see them. See Send cold email from your custom-domain email.

If the alias changes in Gmail

Distro doesn't watch your Gmail settings in the background. It re-reads your "Send mail as" list when you connect or reconnect, click Enable, click Refresh addresses, or click Check again.

  • Alias removed in Gmail, then refreshed in Distro: the sender disappears from the Sending accounts page and the From list. A campaign that was set to use it can't launch until you pick another sender; Distro shows "No sender mailbox is configured." Emails a running campaign would have sent from that alias are not sent.
  • Alias removed in Gmail, but not refreshed in Distro: Distro still offers it, and Gmail decides what to do with messages sent as an address it no longer allows, for example sending them from your main address. Refresh after any change to avoid surprises.
  • Alias added back in Gmail: refresh in Distro and it returns.

Good to know

  • An alias is not an extra mailbox for plan limits. Plans count connected Google accounts.
  • Aliases share their Google account's sending limit. Spreading a campaign across aliases of the same account doesn't increase volume. See Gmail sending limits explained.
  • Removing a sender in Distro (Remove sender) doesn't touch Gmail. If campaigns still use it, Distro warns you first.
