Pause, resume or end a campaign
How to pause and resume a running Distro campaign, cancel it for good, and what Completed, Cancelled, Archived and Delete mean.
You can pause a running campaign at any time and resume it later, or cancel it so nothing more is sent. Campaigns also finish on their own once every recipient has reached the end of the sequence.
This page is about Email campaigns. Email + LinkedIn campaigns work a little differently; see Email + LinkedIn campaigns below.
Campaign statuses
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Draft | Being built. Editable |
| Ready | Passed its checks but hasn't been sent yet. Still editable |
| Active | Launched. Emails go out within the schedule (including a campaign scheduled to start later) |
| Paused | Launched, but nothing is sent until you resume |
| Completed | Every recipient finished the sequence or was stopped |
| Cancelled | You cancelled it. Nothing more is sent |
| Archived | Hidden from your main list, history kept |
In the Campaigns list, the status picker filters by All statuses, Drafts, Ready, Active, Paused, Completed or Archived. If you also use LinkedIn, the tabs All, Email, LinkedIn and Email + LinkedIn filter by type.
Pause a campaign
- Open the campaign from Outreach โ Campaigns.
- Click Pause at the top of the page.
You'll see "Campaign paused. Nothing more is sent until you resume." Emails waiting to go out are held. Each recipient keeps their place in the sequence, and nothing is lost. Replies, unsubscribes and bounces are still recorded while the campaign is paused.
Resume a campaign
Open the paused campaign and click Resume. Sending picks up again, within your sending hours and daily limit, so emails that came due during the pause are spread out rather than sent in a burst.
If you paused because of a sender problem, fix it first (for example reconnect the Google account in Outreach โ Sending accounts), then resume.
Cancel a campaign
Cancelling ends a campaign permanently: no more emails are sent and queued work is dropped.
- Open the campaign and go to the Delivery tab.
- Click Cancel campaign.
- Confirm with Cancel campaign, or choose Keep running.
A cancelled campaign shows Edit as draft, which turns it back into an editable draft. If you send it again, people who were already enrolled in it aren't enrolled a second time.
When a campaign completes
A campaign moves to Completed by itself when every recipient has either reached the end of the sequence or been stopped (replied, unsubscribed, bounced, blocked or excluded). You don't need to end it manually.
Archive or delete
From the โฎ menu on an Email campaign in the Campaigns list (it also has Open, View analytics and Duplicate):
- Archive moves the campaign to the Archived tab and keeps all its history. Restore brings it back as a draft.
- Delete removes a campaign permanently, but only if it never sent anything.
| Campaign | Delete result |
|---|---|
| Never sent anything | Deleted, with its emails and settings |
| Already sent emails | Can't be deleted, only archived, so unsubscribe links in sent emails keep working |
| Still sending | "Stop the campaign first": pause or cancel it, then try again |
Email + LinkedIn campaigns
An Email + LinkedIn campaign (previously called a sequence) has Pause and Resume on its overview and in its row's โฎ menu in the Campaigns list. Pausing stops everything, emails and LinkedIn steps, and everyone keeps their place until you resume.
It has no Cancel campaign. To stop it for good, use Archive (stop for good) from the โฎ menu on its overview, or Archive in the list: everyone still in it is stopped first and its results are kept. Delete is only offered for a draft that never reached anyone. See Email + LinkedIn campaigns.
For LinkedIn campaigns, see LinkedIn campaigns.
Pause versus stopping one person
Pause and Cancel affect everyone in the campaign. To stop emails to a single person, see Add or remove prospects in a campaign.
