Disconnect or reconnect your Google account
How to reconnect a Google account that needs attention, how to disconnect one, and what happens to your senders and campaigns in each case.
Both actions live on the Sending accounts page under Google accounts. Reconnect signs in to Google again so a broken connection works again, and keeps everything as it was. Disconnect removes Distro's access to that Google account and stops all of its senders.
Account statuses
Each account under Google accounts shows one of these statuses:
| Status | What it means | Can it send? |
|---|---|---|
| Connected | Everything is working | Yes |
| Reconnect | Google no longer accepts Distro's access, for example after a password change or because access was removed in your Google Account | No |
| Missing permission | One of the two permissions Distro asks for wasn't allowed | No |
| Revoked | Access to this account was withdrawn | No |
| Error | The last sign-in didn't complete | No |
| Pending | A sign-in was started but hasn't finished | No |
While an account isn't Connected, every sender on it shows Reconnect Google account in the sender list. The Outreach Overview and the Inbox may also show a notice that a connected mailbox needs attention, with a link to Sending accounts.
Reconnect an account
- Go to Outreach โ Sending accounts.
- Under Google accounts, open the โฎ menu next to the account and click Reconnect. (You can also open an affected sender and click Reconnect next to Google account.)
- If Distro shows the Before you continue to Google dialog, click Continue to Google.
- Sign in with the same Google account and allow both permissions.
Back on the Sending accounts page, the account returns to Connected and its senders to Active. Reconnecting:
- Keeps the same account, senders, default sender and campaign settings. You don't need to pick the sender again in your campaigns.
- Doesn't use another mailbox slot on your plan.
- Makes Distro check for replies to your campaigns that arrived while the account was signed out, so stop-on-reply can catch up.
Why Google signs Distro out
Google can withdraw an app's access on its own. Common reasons:
- You removed Distro from the third-party apps list in your Google Account.
- You changed your Google password (Google can sign out apps with Gmail access when this happens).
- A Google Workspace admin changed which apps your organization may use.
- The account was suspended or deleted.
In each case, reconnecting fixes it, unless the account or admin policy still blocks access. See Google account disconnected, permission error or connection failed.
Disconnect an account
- Go to Outreach โ Sending accounts.
- Under Google accounts, open the โฎ menu next to the account and click Disconnect.
- Confirm in the Disconnect this Google account? dialog.
What happens when you disconnect:
- Its senders stop sending. The account and all of its senders, including aliases, disappear from the Sending accounts page and from campaign sender pickers.
- Queued sending work for that mailbox is cancelled. Campaigns using one of its senders won't send from it again unless you connect the account again.
- Distro asks Google to cancel its access and deletes the stored access grant. Only non-secret details about the connection are kept.
- Your mailbox is untouched. Nothing is deleted from your mailbox, and emails already sent stay in your Sent folder.
- Your Distro sign-in isn't affected.
- It frees a mailbox slot on your plan.
To use the account again later, add a sender with its address and click Enable, as in Connect your Google account to Distro. Check your campaigns afterwards, in the Delivery tab, to see where each recipient stands before you resume.
Disconnect vs remove a sender
| Remove sender | Disconnect account | |
|---|---|---|
| Affects | One address | The Google account and all its senders |
| Distro's Google access | Kept | Withdrawn |
| Campaigns using it | Stop sending (Distro warns you first) | Stop sending |
| Undo | Add the sender again | Connect the account again |
