What is Ideal Customer Profile (ICP)?

An ideal customer profile is a detailed description of the type of company or person most likely to benefit from and pay for a product. For B2B, it covers attributes like company size, industry, revenue, and the specific problem your product solves. For B2C, it focuses on demographics, behaviors, and the situations that trigger a purchase.

An ICP is about fit, not just interest. The goal is to describe the customer who gets the most value, stays the longest, and is cheapest to reach — not everyone who might conceivably buy.

The most common ICP mistake is being too broad. "Small business owners" is not an ICP. "Solo B2B SaaS founders under $10K MRR doing their own marketing" is. The narrower the profile, the sharper every distribution decision becomes.

Why it matters

A precise ICP is the filter for every marketing decision you make. It tells you which channels to use, what message to lead with, and who to ignore — which is just as important as who to pursue.

Founders who skip the ICP end up marketing to everyone and converting no one, because a message built for everybody resonates with nobody.
